VIRGEN DE GUIA (2008) by J.A. Austria, oil pastel on paper, private collection. This is probably one of my earliest extant art works. It was done at the suggestion of my Jungian analyst to honor the symbol of Black Madonnas in one’s pysche. The nearest Black Madonna in Manila that I can think of is the Virgen de Guia of Ermita district which happens to be the oldest image of the Virgin Mary in the Philippines. The drawing turned out to be very naive, child-like. To some extent i wanted to return to the innocence of that early period when I was still struggling to draw. There is power in drawings that are child-like.
Hail Mary, full of grace.
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.

Holy Spirit, grant me all these graces. Implant in my soul the tree of true life, which is Mary. Foster it and cultivate it so that it grows and blossoms and brings forth the fruit of life in abundance. Holy Spirit, give me a great love and longing for Mary, your exalted spouse. Give me a great trust in her maternal heart and a continuous access to her compassion, so that with her you may truly form Jesus, great and powerful, in me until I attain the fullness of his perfect age. Amen.
